The solution to flat feet lies in the realisation that there is almost certainly nothing wrong with your child’s feet.
The solution to flat feet lies in the realisation that there is almost certainly nothing wrong with your child’s feet, but that the source of the problem is the modern built environment. Hard, flat, surfaces. Everywhere.
Clearly, it is impractical to go back to wandering about barefoot in the forest!
Classical biomechanical theory (Rootian theory and its variants) is generally based on something called the “neutral foot position” and a rigid set of criteria which define what is “normal”.
Custom orthotics are made from non-weight bearing shapes of the feet (laser scan or plaster cast) and attempt to make the foot work in line with a questionable theoretical ideal.
These devices may be wholly or partially successful in controlling any symptoms in the short-term, but will ultimately weaken the feet. They are also often difficult for a child to tolerate.
After many years of being dissatisfied with methods of producing custom orthotics based on classical lines, Evolution Orthotic Systems developed a modern solution that is based on the following insights:
We call our unique approach 'The Rugby Protocol'.
The Rugby Protocol also works for the adult foot.
What is too late? Well, if the foot is arthritic – particularly the great toe and mid-foot joints - and there are serious issues with knees and low back then the outcome is likely to be compromised. It might still be worthwhile coming for a consultation so that we can direct you to other sources of help.
However, if you are a fit and active adult, with good ranges of motion in your foot-joints, but are suffering pain and discomfort then please contact us on 01788 565076.
High-level or professional sports people with a requirement for orthotics for specific sports should also contact us directly. We have made devices for professional football and rugby players, high-level squash players, an Olympic-level speed skater, county cricketers and any number of distance runners. In these cases we always recommend two pairs of Rugby Protocol orthotics. One ¾ pair for day shoes and a full-length pair for sports shoes.
If you are already wearing custom orthotics based on plaster-cast or laser systems and you’re not comfortable with them, or feel they might be sub-optimal, we can test to see if they are working properly.
Improved Sporting Performance in Adults and Young People
Pushing off through a foot that bends in the middle ("abnormal pronation") is wasteful of your energy and predisposes you to injury. Improving the foot's ability to lock itself and become a rigid propulsive lever will generally result in you being quicker off the mark, with more of your effort driving you forwards. In short, if you want to get ahead, fix your feet!
The orthotics from Evolution are unique. But so is our no-quibble guarantee. If, after one month of wearing the orthotics, your child has rejected them/not benefitted from them simply return the orthotics by Royal Mail Signed For® delivery for a full refund of all fees (bar the initial consultation).
